In this context we will look at the application of cartographic methods and techniques in representing data in more desirable way graphically.

This learning path will introduce you to these elements of cartoraphic methods and techniques of representing data in meaningfully graphically manner.

We will start with the element of a "Map" in this path. For most efficient and effective means of transferring spatial information, maps are key as they can allow users to locate geographical objects with the use of signs and symbols of colours and shapes.

1. Map

Aside maps, we will move on to know cartographic communication processes to help us understand cartographic design rules which facilitate that resulting maps are well understood by users.

2. Cartographic communication

Visual Variables are the next elements we will consider in this learning path as they influence the map user's perception in different ways: 1. what is of importance, saturation differences; 2. order ; 3. quantities; and 4. Instant overview of the map theme.

3. Visual variable

Traditionally, maps are divided into two sorts: 1.Topographic maps; and 2. Thematic maps. This leads us to map types as an important element here worth for our discussion.

4. Map type

To find the proper symbology for a map one has to analyse the cartographic data. The core of this process of analysis is to access the characteristics of the data to find out how they can be visualized, so that the map user will interpret them properly. This brings us to mapping of qualitative data and mapping of quantitative data. The first data mapping for our consumption is mapping of qualitative data.
