[GC2-2] Model development

Many typologies of models have been developed and these tend to emphasise dichotomies in model design such as ‘complicated’ versus ‘simple’. Although such black and white dichotomies are invariably simplistic, they still provide a useful way of thinking about the trade-offs to be made in developing appropriate and manageable abstractions or representations of real-world phenomena. Therefore, developing detailed and dynamic spatial models comes at the cost of generality and interpretability, but it brings us realism and the ability to represent processes in specific contexts. The aim of the concept is to provide basic understanding of general principles to choosing different approaches for model development.
