[TA14-2-2-1-1] Land cover maps

Land cover maps represent spatial information on different types (classes) of physical coverage of the Earth's surface, e.g. forests, grasslands, croplands, lakes, wetlands. An example is the European Copernicus product CORINE land cover (CLC) with 44 classes. Initiated in 1985 (reference year 1990), updates followed in 2000 and every 6 years afterwards. Apart from CLC, the European Copernicus Land products also include the High Resolution Layers. They includes for example the imperviousness product that captures the percentage of soil sealing. Land cover classification products are multi-purpose products that are relevant for various applications. They are available on national levels, regional levels and global levels. They have different scales and granularity of their associated classification scheme. The products are updated on a regular basis. Update cycles can vary depending on the resolution (i.e. likelihood for observable change of the land surface) and the capability of production processes. An additional example on a global scale is the Global Urban Footprint. The products are provided by public organisations and private EO companies and based on various EO sensors.
