Earth observation payloads measure properties of the atmosphere, oceans, land, cryosphere, or human activity. They may use the optical/infrared or the radio parts of the spectrum and can be active (transmit a signal and reeived the associated echo), or passive (do not transmit any signal, measure electromagnetic radiation or other signals of opportunity).
