Explain what the Resource Description Framework (RDF) is and what it can be used for

Concepts

  • [WB2] Resource Definition
A "resource" could be "anything" including data and services, identifiable over the Web. A resource should be defined in a language to be discoverable on the Web. Over the years, two major bodies W3C for non-spatial and OGC concerning spatial data have developed many specifications for defining data and services. On the W3C side, Resource Description Framework (RDF) has gained a great momentum in recent years in relation to the recent popularity of Linked Data as well. In the OGC front, the acceptance of GML was a major step concerning the long time effort of geospatial communities for having a standard for the definition of both geospatial features and geometry.
